Ex-England man's verdict on Huddersfield Town promotion chances as Terriers taken seriously

Huddersfield Town's record-breaking win at St Andrew's on Saturday took them third in the Championship table and the secret is officially out.

Having flown under the radar of many despite their excellent season to date the Terriers are now the side to watch – unbeaten in seventeen across all competitions, their best ever run in the second tier, and only Fulham and Bournemouth have won more points away from home.

Saturday’s 2-0 win in Birmingham was the next step in a journey that has seen them rise from eleventh in November to serious play-off candidates now. That sort of run makes them contenders and the pundits are noticing.

Speaking on EFL on Quest ex-West Ham striker Dean Ashton admitted they are defying all expectations at this point and have to be taken seriously.

“Huddersfield, once again, continue to surprise me,” said Ashton, “that they’re able to just be so efficient in the way that they play.”

That efficiency was on display again yesterday as Lee Nicholls claimed his 14th clean sheet of the season to move two clear in the overall standings ahead of Sheffield United’s Wes Foderingham.

Nicholls is also second in the league for overall saves and save percentage as Town’s defensive unit is on course to concede fewer goals than any season over the last decade.

The Terriers now move onto a key week with Peterborough to come to the John Smith’s Stadium on Friday evening and then an FA Cup Fifth Round tie with Nottingham Forest to follow on Monday live on ITV. The following Friday they face a tough away game against West Brom.
