Ex-Bolton Wanderers, Middlesbrough and Oldham Athletic defender David Wheater joins new club

Former Bolton Wanderers captain David Wheater has joined non-league side Darlington.

The 35-year-old ex-Whites, Middlesbrough and Oldham Athletic man has joined the club for the second time, having originally had a spell with Darlington in January 2007.

Wheater is available to play for the Quakers in this afternoon's National League North clash against Chorley.

Wheater turned out more than 230 times for Wanderers and scored 16 goals after joining the club from Middlesbrough in 2011.

He had played 35 times for the Latics and scored four goals in the 2019/20 campaign, after arriving from Wanderers in the summer of 2019.

He left Oldham in mid-March of last season.

Wheater spent part of the 2006/07 season on loan at Darlington when the club were in League One.

He has racked up more than 400 appearances so far in his playing career and found the back of the net 35 times.

Darlington manager Alun Armstrong said: "David has steadily improved his fitness while he's been recovering from injury, and his experience will be invaluable to us."
