Everton need improvements to their squad following a disappointing Premier League season, and now a new update has emerged on a previous transfer target that could be a potential solution for the Toffees.

According to 90min, Leeds United have joined the race to sign New York City FC’s Valentin Castellanos, with Everton named as one of the clubs that will rival their fellow Premier League club to secure the signing.

As per the report, the MLS club is co-owned by the City Football Group which also owns Manchester City and the powers at the Manchester club have reportedly made recommendations to Castellanos on which Premier League clubs would be best suited for his talents.

There is no doubt that Everton needs to identify players that can help them convert more goal-scoring opportunities, with the Toffees scoring the sixth-fewest goals in the Premier League last season which ultimately led them into their difficult relegation battle.

With Cenk Tosun set to leave the club this summer due to his contract expiring at Goodison Park, identifying a player who can come in and improve upon his lack of goals and contributions to the team would be a major coup for Farhad Moshiri.

The 30-year-old Turkish striker has scored only 11 goals and delivered six assists in 61 appearances over the last four years, which is a good indication as to why Everton are not interested in offering him an extension on his expiring contract and as a result, he will be free to leave this summer.

Moshiri can repair his mistakes made on signing Tosun by offering Lampard a goal-scoring striker who is prolific in front of goal and gives the manager another option to add depth to his team when injuries occur in the front three.
