Everton dealt fresh injury blow ahead of Newcastle United crunch clash

Everton have been dealt an injury blow ahead of their crucial trip to Newcastle United on Tuesday night.

This is after Ben Godfrey was taken off in the 4-1 FA Cup win over Brentford and Frank Lampard has revealed that it's a hamstring issue which could keep the centre-back out of the game at St James' Park.

The 24-year-old limped off in the 14th minute with Yerry Mina replacing him in a three-man defence and the latter went on to score the opening goal against the Bees.

Richarlison, Mason Holgate and Andros Townsend also found the net as Lampard marked his first game in charge of the Toffees with a well-earned victory at Goodison Park.

However, Godfrey's injury could be a massive blow for Everton after his impressive performances during the first half of the season, firmly cementing his place as a regular starter in the meantime.

Godfrey has played in all but three of the Toffees' Premier League matches this term and is likely to miss the clash with Eddie Howe's side after sustaining a hamstring problem.

"It's a hamstring injury which we will assess and scan in a couple of days," Lampard said in his post-Brentford press conference.

"It's a shame because Ben is another great young talent and it's a big shame for us. But you saw Yerry came on and was brilliant.

"He's been training this week, it's a shame but we'll assess it in the next couple of days."

After the game, Godfrey posted about his condition on Twitter. He said: "Some performance that from the boys! Gutted to come off injured, I’ll be back."

It's poised to be a pivotal game towards the bottom of the division, with Newcastle searching for their second successive top-flight win which would see them move out of the bottom three.
