Europa round-up: AC Milan withstand Rennes fightback to progress to last-16

AC Milan saw off a spirited fightback by Rennes to secure a place in the last 16 of the Europa League.
The Serie A side had looked in control of the tie following a 3-0 win in the first leg at San Siro.

However, a hat-trick from Benjamin Bourigeaud gave the Ligue 1 outfit hope - but it was not enough as goals in each half from Luka Jovic and Rafael Leao saw the Rossoneri safely into Friday's draw despite a 3-2 defeat on the night.

Qarabag edged past Braga 6-5 on aggregate after a stoppage-time goal from Nariman Akhundzade at the end of extra time.

The Azerbaijan side had won the first leg in Portugal 4-2, but after defender Elvin Jafarquliyev was sent off just before the hour, Braga rallied to wipe out the deficit with goals from Roger Fernandes and Alvaro Djalo.

Matheus Silva restored Qarabag's advantage in the first half of extra time but Simon Banza's penalty made it 3-1 on the night, and level at 5-5 overall, before Akhundzade struck in added time to secure a dramatic win.

Roland Sallai scored twice, including a stoppage-time equaliser, as Freiburg recovered from 2-0 down on the night to beat Lens 3-2 and progress to the last 16 after extra time, with the first leg in France having finished goalless.

There was, though, no such drama as Benfica held out for a 0-0 draw at Toulouse to complete a 2-1 aggregate win.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was on target as Marseille beat Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1 at Stade Velodrome to go through 5-3 on aggregate.

Sparta Prague overturned a first-leg deficit to knockout Galatasaray.

The Czech league leaders had been beaten 3-2 in Istanbul, but turned the tie around with a 4-1 home win after Galatasaray defender Kaan Ayhan had been sent off in the second half.
