"Erm... what?": Eric Cantona was on the BBC last night and it's got quite a reaction

He is the footballing maverick who stole the hearts of a generation of Manchester United fans. Eric Cantona became a Manchester United legend who helped propel the club to league titles and FA Cup wins before his shock retirement, aged just 30.

After a foray into acting, most notably in 2009's Looking for Eric, Eric the King, as United fans know him, has now turned his hand to singing. Having released an EP, he is now set to release an album featuring performances from his first live shows, which included a mesmerising gig at the Stoller Hall in Manchester last October. He is set to return for another tour, calling at the Palace Theatre in April.

Our reviewer John Shammas wrote of the former United captain's performance at the Stoller Hall: "It is all a bit objectively bizarre, though - and at times, rubbish. But as every song concludes we all clap and cheer as loud as we can: we just want him to know how much he is loved.

"And it is undeniably a very self-aware performance. In one moment, you find yourself thinking 'this is crap' and then moments later you're thinking: 'Oh this is actually a satire on the nature of art, celebrity and performance - and it's actually genius and probably the best thing I'll ever see'. Maybe it's a little from Column A, and a little from Column B."

During a performance on Michael McIntyre's BBC show last night, the wider public got a glimpse of the mercurial Frenchman, who gave a rendition of his song 'The Friends We Lost'. Many enjoyed his performance, but others were no so convinced.
