Erling Haaland in major Man City injury scare as superstar striker set to miss Scotland send-off

Norway will be the reluctant guests at Scotland's Euro 2024 send off at Hampden on Sunday.

But it could be an Erling Haaland-free zone after the Manchester City superstar aggravated an ankle injury during his country's 2-0 friendly win over the Faroe Islands on Thursday night, sparking fears he could miss the Premier League champions' looming clash with Liverpool. The pair face off at the Etihad a week on Saturday with just one point separating then at the top of the table.

Haaland was on target from the spot back in June when it looked like the Scandinavians were going to dent Scotland's qualification hopes after a dream start to the campaign. However, a dramatic late turnaround after Haaland had been subbed off saw Steve Clarke's men leave Oslo with a 2-1 win and all but kill off Norway's chances. The Scots eventually booked their Euros spot last month thanks to Spain's 1-0 win over Haaland and Co.

It will be party time at Hampden on Sunday night. But Haaland may have to give it a miss in order to make sure he's fit for domestic duties. Norway team doctor Ola Sand said: “It was much of the same that happened against Bournemouth a week and a half ago. He has had it before too. He gets a slight twist in his ankle, where he is a bit vulnerable. It hurts a lot right away, and then it goes away pretty quickly.

“Now he will receive some treatment, then there will be peace and rest and then we will see how he is tomorrow morning. We have already spoken to City. Erling has spoken to both City and (chief doctor) Mario (Pafundi) already.”
