Erik ten Hag's resolve is about to be tested like never before at Manchester United

Jadon Sancho arrived at Manchester United for just over £70m, yet found himself in the position of being entirely omitted from United’s squad in their 3-1 loss against Arsenal.

His explosive comments, publicly and openly disagreeing with his manager Erik ten Hag’s reasoning behind Sancho’s absence will have done him absolutely no favours in finding his way back into the team. Yet, as the international break draws to a close, the 22-year-old finds himself in a position where he could come straight back into the side.

The suspension of Brazilian winger, Antony, by United leaves Ten Hag in a difficult situation. Sancho is now one of only two fit out-and-out right wingers at the club alongside Facundo Pellestri.

It is here that Ten Hag’s resolve in leaving out Sancho will be seriously tested. Sancho has reason to want to grab the opportunity to play again for the team with both hands, not least for his personal sake.

If nothing else, putting a strong run of form together for United would help Sancho get himself in the shop window as well as helping his hopes of playing at the Euros in Germany this summer. With players like Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford likely a shoe-in for the England squad, Sancho will be competing with a resurgent Raheem Sterling among others for very limited spaces in the England squad come June 2024.

Sancho had a number of suitors in previous windows, reportedly including top six rivals Tottenham Hotspur, but it remains to be seen if Sancho and Ten Hag really do believe that the Englishman’s time at the club has run its course.
