Erik ten Hag's centre-back search could give Manchester United a whole new problem to deal with

Manchester United are in the market for defensive reinforcements this summer. The Manchester Evening News understands that the club are willing to offload Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe amongst others, and so Erik ten Hag's need for a new centre-back is clear.

Ajax defenders Jurrien Timber and Lisandro Martinez have both been linked, while Villarreal's Pau Torres and Braga's David Carmo remain of interest. Bar Timber, all these centre-backs are left-footed and that would mean that United's remaining options would likely be forced to fight it out for a place on the right-hand side.

This could spell bad news for Victor Lindelof. The Swedish defender lost his starting spot to Raphael Varane last season when the French defender was signed from Real Madrid. If another centre-back is signed he could move down to fourth-choice in the pecking order.

Lindelof is great on the ball and his passing ability would likely be an asset to Ten Hag. However, Lindelof has his problems in defence; he struggles in aerial duels and last season we saw that he has a tendency to switch off at vital points in the game. Fans will remember the 4-1 defeat to Manchester City when Phil Foden went past the Swedish defender, but instead of recovering and helping to stop the chance, he stopped and it resulted in a goal.

When Ten Hag was at Ajax, fans and pundits alike lauded his tactics but did add that he was prone to under-rotating his team, and this could be an issue at United.
