Erik ten Hag reacts to Man United loss as Ralf Rangnick explains Cristiano Ronaldo penalty call

Here are your Manchester United evening headlines for Sunday, April 24.

Erik ten Hag reacts to Manchester United defeat to Arsenal

Erik ten Hag refused to comment on United’s latest defeat as he insisted his focus remains on Ajax this season. The 52-year-old took charge of his current side for the first time since being confirmed as United’s new manager.

Ten Hag led his team to a 1-0 win over NEC Nijmegen to take them a step closer to the Eredivisie title. Ajax’s win came just hours after United's trip to Arsenal.

United fell to a 3-1 defeat at the Emirates as they suffered their second loss of the week and their third in the last four games. The loss all but ends United’s hopes of finishing in the top four, having drifted six points off the Gunners with just four games remaining.

Ralf Rangnick explains why Cristiano Ronaldo did not take United penalty vs Arsenal

Cristiano Ronaldo declined the opportunity to take United's penalty against Arsenal that Bruno Fernandes missed. Ronaldo had converted spot-kicks against Arsenal and Norwich earlier this season but missed his last penalty in regulation time in the FA Cup fourth round against Middlesbrough. Ronaldo still converted in the shootout.

Fernandes stepped up and missed his second penalty of the season to spurn the chance to equalise. Fernandes was then at fault for Granit Xhaka's clincher in the 70th minute that sealed a 3-1 win for Arsenal. "I spoke with him after the game and asked him," Rangnick said of Ronaldo's decision not to take the penalty.
