Erik ten Hag must accept uncomfortable truth about Manchester United style of play

Erik ten Hag labelled it the best football he had seen his side play all season before a controversial red card halted Manchester United's momentum and turned the game on its head.

United even played well when they slowed things down and took the sting out of the game with 10 men, though that counted for little when they eventually lost their grip and caved to the Copenhagen onslaught.

What is clear is that there are still positives to take as they look to transform their season in the coming weeks. It was also clear that United are still a better side when they play on the counterattack.

There is an obvious desire from Ten Hag for his side to start controlling matches more and not rely on moments of magic or momentum to do their damage, but right now that is a tough ask.

United have regressed in the opening months of the season and with so many key players injured or unavailable, they have lacked the consistency to establish a coherent style of play.

It has been difficult to try and build out from the back when 11 different back four combinations have been used in the last 16 matches, and a lack of consistency in midfield also hasn't helped matters either.

The result has been a makeshift motley crew of individuals signed by different managers who lack an overarching style of play, with temporary fixes needed at a time when a long-term vision has been required.

Right now, the style of play has to take a backseat. United have lost more than they have won this season and the ends will justify the means so long as they start winning matches again.
