Erik ten Hag gets Matthijs de Ligt transfer approval but Man United concern emerges
Rene Meulensteen believes Matthijs de Ligt would suit a move to Manchester United and the Premier League, but has warned that he may not be good enough on the ball.
The Bayern Munich defender has been linked with a summer move to Old Trafford after agreeing personal terms with United. The Reds are yet to agree on a transfer fee with Bayern though and their need for centre-back reinforcements will have grown after Leny Yoro's serious injury during pre-season.
United are open to signing three new centre-backs this summer after Raphael Varane and Willy Kambwala left Erik ten Hag's team. Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite has been one of the players strongly linked, with the Toffees rejecting two bids from United so far.

And amid interest in former Ajax defender De Ligt, ex-Man United assistant coach Meulensteen believes it would be the right move. However, in a potential warning to United, he admits that Bayern may believe that the Dutchman is not good enough on the ball.
“Matthijs de Ligt can reach his potential in the Premier League, he is a player who suits the division,” he said via Teamtalk.
“He is strong, powerful and it helps that Erik ten Hag knows him. De Ligt was flying at Ajax when Ten Hag was there and he was one of the best players in Holland.
“I think the move to Juventus didn’t quite work and his career stalled at Bayern Munich because they might not think he is good enough on the ball. But United need strengthening and he will do that at centre-back.”
