David de Gea needs to learn a key lesson if he's to succeed under Erik ten Hag at Man United

David de Gea has always been a great shot-stopper - it was the reason Sir Alex Ferguson spent around £17m on him back in 2011. When he first came to the Premier League, his ability to pull out spectacular saves stopped certain goals but questions were raised over his command of his area.

11 years later, it's fair to say De Gea's United career has been one of ups and downs. Many regarded him as the best goalkeeper in the world during the mid-2010s, but under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he regressed and ultimately saw his place as United's number one challenged by Dean Henderson.

The Manchester Evening News understands that Nottingham Forest are trying to sign Henderson on loan and it is likely that the English shot-stopper will leave this summer in search of a guaranteed starting spot. This means De Gea will be United's undisputed number one, but some fans are unsure whether he can adapt to Erik ten Hag's style of football.

This won't be the first time a possession-based Dutch manager has tried to adapt De Gea to his methods. Louis van Gaal wanted the Spanish goalkeeper to do the same during his time at Old Trafford but enjoyed very little success.

Frans Hoek, nicknamed the 'Godfather of Goalkeeping', was tasked with bringing De Gea up to scratch. But throughout his time at the club, there were reports of friction between the two, with De Gea - and some of United's other goalkeepers - refusing to adapt to his methods earlier on in his time at Old Trafford.
