Erik ten Hag explains what Manuel Ugarte will bring to Manchester United after £42.3m transfer

Manager Erik ten Hag believes Manuel Ugarte will provide the "controlled aggression" that Manchester United have been lacking after the midfielder finalised his move to Old Trafford.

United wrapped up the signing of the Uruguayan international on deadline day evening, signing him on a five-year deal, featuring the option of a sixth. He has joined the club from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal that is initially worth €50million (£42.3m), with a further €10m (£8.5m) due in add-ons.

Ugarte, 23, was the club's primary midfield target throughout the transfer window. They were happy to play a patient game to lure him to Old Trafford after being reluctant to match PSG's initial demand of €60m (£50.6m).

The former Sporting Lisbon man is expected to replace Casemiro as United's midfield anchor, meaning he looks set to form a third of the club's first-choice midfield alongside Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes. And for Ten Hag, Ugarte will provide the trait that United have been missing most in the engine room.

"I think he is a very good fit to Manchester United," Ten Hag told Sky Sports prior to the deal being officially confirmed. "I think he is a very good fit to this team because this team needs that controlled aggression.

"He is a very brave player, so we will be really happy. I am sure he will really contribute to our success."

Ugarte, who made 37 appearances in his first and only season in the French capital, was not signed in time to be available for Sunday's Premier League clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford. The cut-off point for new signings to be available for this weekend's fixtures was 12pm on Friday.
