Erik ten Hag can do one thing to lift Manchester United mood before the international break

If Manchester United supporters were to pick one word to describe their team's performances so far this season, 'indifferent' would likely do the job - at least in terms of what can be published, anyway.

Erik ten Hag's side have two wins from their opening three games, their only defeat coming at a Tottenham Hotspur side who will likely be a major rival for a top-four finish. They are better off than this time last season and have not been humbled by a Brighton or a Brentford.

But scorelines do not paint the full picture. Wins over Wolves and Nottingham Forest were far from convincing, and the former was not deserved in anyone's view.

Saturday's 3-2 comeback win over Forest was slightly better, with the Reds able to compose themselves after two sucker-punches. But as many fans left Old Trafford - be it after full-time or a 60-minute sit-in protest against the Glazers - few were buzzing with excitement at the season to come.

United's first three weeks of the campaign has been average at best, with moments of calamity littered throughout. Injury to the likes of Luke Shaw, Raphael Varane and Mason Mount has done little to lift the mood.

The first international break often represents a chance for clubs to take stock, with four or five games in the bank and squads finalised upon the closure of the transfer window. While players jet off to represent their countries, staff and fans can reflect.

As it stands, United will go into that fortnight with more questions than answers, but Sunday's trip to Arsenal - their last game before the break - will dictate whether that changes.
