Erik ten Hag admits he wants more signings at Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag admits he would like more signings before the transfer window closes.

United have invested £179.2million in Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund but intend to sign a central defender if Harry Maguire leaves and were rejected by Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.

A back-up 'keeper could still come in as Tom Heaton is out for a few weeks with a thigh strain while Dean Henderson, nearing full fitness after thigh surgery, last played on January 21.

"Managers always want more!" Ten Hag laughed. "I think every manager you ask wants more. But it is more about the mentality and in top football you have to demand the maximum. And because we also do that from our players and the fans expect it from us, so always you look for the perfect situation.

"But you also know you never get the perfect situation and you have to work for that, maybe not with the perfect situation, but to get the perfect results."

United have committed £405.4m on permanent signings since Ten Hag took over last year and their spending could go north of £200m for the second summer running if they recruit a defender.

Supporters have accused United's owners, the Glazer family, of under-investing in the squad in the past but Ten Hag has enjoyed enviable backing after a slow start last summer that was blighted by the fruitless pursuit of Frenkie de Jong and a bid for journeyman forward Marko Arnautovic that was widely condemned by fans.
