Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting's former boss warns Manchester United about transfer

Mark Hughes has questioned the impact Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, his former Stoke City player, would bring to Manchester United.

The ex-Reds striker signed Choupo-Moting for the Potters in 2017, leaving for Paris Saint-Germain on a free a year later after scoring just five times in 32 appearances. Since 2020, the striker has scored 38 times in 107 matches for Bayern Munich - 16 more goals than he managed to net at PSG.

Like RB Leipzig's Timo Werner, he is rumoured to be of interest to United, who are looking for loan or cut-price deals in January with the club concerned about overspending under Financial Fair Play. Choupo-Moting has started just three of his 14 Bundesliga outings this season, and came off the bench against United in September's opening Champions League group stage match.

He has managed to net three goals in 19 games across all competitions and the 34-year-old would be available to play for United from the off having been omitted from Cameroon’s Africa Cup of Nations squad.

Hughes was complimentary of Choupo-Moting’s persona and said he does have something to offer from his time in the Premier League. However, he told Sky Sports that the attacker may not be the kick-starter Ten Hag needs in attack this season.

“I think it’s needs must at this moment in time,” Hughes said of United’s transfer hunt amid their attacking frailties. “I had Choupo-Moting at Stoke, I brought him to the club. He’s a great guy around the place, has a nice personality, and can play clearly.
