Eric Cantona’s plea over £2billion Old Trafford decision snubbed by Man Utd chiefs

Manchester United are set to snub club legend Eric Cantona's plea to not demolish Old Trafford.

United's controlling owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has voiced his ambition to build a new stadium since buying his minority stake in the club in February. The Red Devils are now planning to build a new 100,000 seater 'Wembley of the North'.

The Ineos owner and billionaire established the Old Trafford Task Force to evaluate the feasibility of relocating from their decrepit ground, which has been plagued by flooding and complaints about the state of the stands, food facilities, and toilets.

Now it has emerged that Ratcliffe hopes to construct an entirely new state-of-the-art stadium on land next to Old Trafford by 2030. The colossal project, which could be confirmed by year's end, is estimated to cost around £2billion.

Despite the obvious facility improvements and long-term financial advantages, tearing down a historic and iconic footballing colosseum is a controversial move. Former striker Cantona, who played for the Red Devils between 1992 and 1997, has been one of its most outspoken critics.

The Frenchman aired his concerns earlier this month, complaining that a new stadium would land a devastating blow to the club's soul and atmosphere. He implored the United hierarchy to abandon their plans, highlighting Arsenal’s 2006 move from Highbury to the Emirates Stadium as a cautionary tale.
