'Enormous mistake' — Man City fans divided as European rivals eye Raheem Sterling transfer

One of the narratives that has followed Manchester City around over the past few seasons surrounds the future of Raheem Sterling — and it doesn't look like going away anytime soon.

The 27-year-old attacker has a little more than a year left on his current contract, and despite reports earlier this year that he had agreed to a new deal, his City future remains up in the air.

Fresh reports have now emerged claiming that interest in Sterling is gathering from a host of top European clubs including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, and even Chelsea. It's believed that it has long been Sterling's intention to resolve his City future — one way or another — after England's Nations League fixtures in June.

Despite his enormous contribution to City's success during seven years at the club, Sterling has become a divisive figure among supporters in recent years. Many regard him as one of the best attackers in the game, will some point to his inconsistent form over the past two years as a signal of a decline of some kind.

Judging by Twitter, whatever happens not all City fans are going to be satisfied. Here's what they said on latest rumours about Sterling's future:

@citehxen: But apparently he’s overrated. There isn’t one club in Europe that wouldn’t take him. We need to do everything to keep him

@YKMCFC: brother, you're irreplaceable Stay, sign the contract and win us the UCL next year

@CTIDJOE: If he wants to leave please let him, I like him but I don’t want people at the club who wants to leave.

@GidzOG: Don't want him to leave but if any player wants to leave this great club and manager, Don't stop them at the end
