England fans flabbergasted that they've been singing Three Lions wrong for years

We're delighted that Euro 2024 is about to begin.

Fans up and down the country are excited to be hitting the beer gardens with our football shirts on, flags, and many, many pints of lager in hand. And to mark the football tournament, we'll be singing England anthems in full voice.

Vindaloo, We're on the Ball and Southgate You're The One are firm favourites among footy fans. But if Three Lions is your song of choice, you'll have to make sure you're actually getting the words right.

The tune, released in 1996 by The Lightning Seeds and comedy duo Frank Skinner and David Baddiel, has a phrase in it that's been tripping people up for 28 years. It sounds like 'jewels remain still gleaming' – but is actually "Jules Rimet still gleaming."

And if you're wondering why, it's a reference to FIFA's longest-serving president Jules Rimet. He had the World Cup Trophy named after him between 1946 and 1970, which is why the singers say our old trophy from 1966 is still "gleaming" with hope.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, one England fan confessed: "Sorry, but Jules Rimet still gleaming? Thought it was jewels remain still gleaming for 25 years."

Another agreed, commenting: "Oh my GOD. This whole time, 22 years, I thought the line was 'Jewels remain still gleaming'... Like... the crown jewels. I know nothing." While a third added: "Can't remember what age I was when I realised it wasn't 'jewels remain, still gleaming'. In my late 20s, I reckon."

Let's hope that clears everything up before the Three Lions take on Serbia this Sunday. England are tipped by bookmakers to clinch the tournament and bring football home.
