England avoid Netherlands as last-16 fixtures confirmed

The pairings for the Euro 2024 Round of 16 have been confirmed, with England avoiding Netherlands and instead facing Slovakia as a result of Georgia's victory over Portugal this evening.

Willy Sagnol's side booked their spot in the knockout phase in their major tournament debut with a memorable 2-0 win over an already-qualified and experimental Portugal side in Gelsenkirchen this evening.

The result eliminated Hungary from the competition, with Georgia taking their spot as one of the top four third placed sides.

This saw a re-arranging of the last-16 fixtures, with England, destined to face Netherlands as things stood at the start of play this evening, now facing Slovakia, the third placed side in Group E.

Importantly, the draw leaves Gareth Southgate's side on the friendly side of the draw, avoiding France, Germany, Portugal and Spain.

Ronald Koeman's side will now face Romania in Munich on Monday, while Spain play Georgia and Portugal face off against Slovenia.

Turkey, who won an anarchic encounter with Czechia this evening, play tournament dark horses Austria.

The second round will commence on Saturday, with Switzerland facing Italy in Berlin at 5pm, after which we've a repeat of the Euro 92 decider as the hosts Germany face Denmark in Dortmund.

Belgium's punishment for failing to top their group is a last-16 meeting with one of the tournament favourites France in Dusseldorf on Monday.
