England boss Gareth Southgate gives update on Man City hero Phil Foden ahead of Hungary

England manager Gareth Southgate has admitted that nothing has been decided regarding Phil Foden’s availability for their Nations League clash with Hungary on Tuesday.

The playmaker was ruled out of the reverse tie and the subsequent draw with Germany after testing positive for Covid-19. He returned to training last week, but the stalemate with Italy on Saturday was deemed too soon for the 22-year-old.

Foden is hoping to be ready in time for tomorrow but Southgate said a late call is needed. Speaking in Monday’s press conference, he said: “We’ve got to chat with our physical performance guys and our medical team.

“He’s back in training but there’s a reality of how much conditioning he’s had over the last three weeks and what our expectation of him could be. We’ll do that as the day progresses.”

Meanwhile, City teammates Kyle Walker, John Stones and Jack Grealish are all available, with Southgate confirming that every squad member was able to train. England are bottom of Group A3 in the Nations League having drawn two and lost one.

They will be hoping to avenge that defeat against Hungary at Molineux and score their first goal from open play in four matches. Foden could earn his 16th cap if deemed ready enough.
