England have taken the lead against Australia thanks to a stunner of a goal from Ella Toone.

The first half an hour of the game was a cagey affair with no team able to make a breakthrough but it was Ella Toone who came through with an incredible strike.

Sarina Wiegman left her side unchanged from the starting XI that faced Colombia as they take on a strong Australian side on home turf at Stadium Australia on Wednesday morning 11am BST in a bit to make history in England - but the Lionesses are ready.

All 23 players have been training, and remain with just Lauren James unavailable as she serves the second of her two-match ban following the red card incident against Nigeria in the round of 16 game.

Australia and Chelsea icon Sam Kerr is poised and ready to start against England after building her way back to fitness after a calf injury the day before the opening World Cup game against Ireland.

When asked about facing the Matildas, Wiegman told the press: “Australia are not just Sam Kerr but yes we have a plan,” said the England. “Of course, she’s a threat, she’s a very good player so there’s lots of respect there, but there’s more than Sam Kerr. There’s a lot of pressure on her because everyone expects things”

The Australian government has opened two further stadia in Sydney - at Lang Park and Paramatta - who boast a combined capacity of 80,000 so that supporters can enjoy the hotly anticipated game on a large screen together. Kick off is at 11am (UK time), with coverage getting underway on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer at 10am.
