Engineers assess structure of railway bridge after two-car smash

Engineers were forced to assess the structural safety of a key railway bridge in Manchester after a two-vehicle collision. As reported in the Manchester Evening News , Hyde Road in Gorton was closed off by police on Thursday night.

The crash is believed to have involved a taxi and a blue pick-up-style truck, which images from the scene showed was left badly damaged.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the crash at around 9.20pm and cordoned off a stretch off the road beneath the railway bridge, near to Armitage CE Primary School and the Bennett Street junction on the opposite side of the bridge.

One casualty was taken to hospital by paramedics after the incident. In a statement today - Friday - Greater Manchester Police said thankfully, the injuries reported were 'not life-threatening'.

The force said one of the vehicles is believed to have struck the railway bridge during the collision, leading to Network Rail engineers carrying out a subsequent inspection in line with policy.

No further details have been revealed, but the road was opened later and trains were running as normal today.

In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: "We received a report of a two-vehicle road traffic collision on Hyde Road, Manchester, at around 9:20pm on Thursday 28 July 2022. It is believed one of the vehicles crashed into the railway bridge which Network Rail are inspecting as part of their protocol.

"Enquiries are ongoing but injuries reported are not life threatening."

Ambulances were also at the scene, as well as officers from Greater Manchester Police as enquiries were carried out. Dramatic pictures of the scene showed the large blue pick-up-style vehicle, which saw its bonnet visibly crushed in the incident.
