Three people escape after shed fire spreads to flats

Three people fled a fire that spread from a shed to flats nearby, the fire service has revealed. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have revealed details of the incident in the Hurstead area of Rochdale on Friday morning.

The service said it received 'several' 999 reports of the blaze at Ralph Sherwin Court and it's understood the fire caused a large plume of smoke seen in the area. Four fire engines raced to the scene.

The service said three people 'self-rescued' before crews got there. They were assessed by paramedics at the scene, but North West Ambulance Service said thankfully no one was taken to hospital.

Firefighters wearing breathing equipment entered the flats involved and properties were checked. The service said the fire began in a shed but spread to a section of flats in the court complex.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "Just after 9am this morning (Friday 29 July) we received the first of several reports about a fire at Ralph Sherwin Court, Rochdale.

"Four fire engines from Oldham, Rochdale and Littleborough fire stations were quickly mobilised to the scene, which involved a fire in a shed which had spread to nearby flats.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels to extinguish the fire and carried out checks of the property. Three people had self-rescued prior to crews' arrival and were assessed by colleagues from North West Ambulance Service.

"GMFRS crews were in attendance for around two hours." No further details have been revealed.
