‘Empty brains’ – Daniil Medvedev fumes at Australian Open crowd during Rafael Nadal clash

Daniil Medvedev slammed the Australian Open crowd during his final match with Rafael Nadal, describing them as ‘idiots’ with ‘no brains.’

The Russian is aiming to deny his opponent a record 21st career Grand Slam and was comfortably in the driving seat after taking a two-set lead.

Nadal began to find his rhythm in the third though and eventually took the set 6-4 as a packed Rod Laver Arena crowd spurred him on.

As the crowd rallied behind the 35-year-old, Medvedev was subjected to occasional boos and jeers with his winners not applauded in the same way as Nadal’s.

The chair umpire also had to remind the crowd not to shout out before players serve or during first and second serves, with Medvedev seemingly the subject of more taunts than his opponent.

Having conceded the third set, Medvedev let his frustrations be known to the umpire.

Talking about the crowd he said: ‘They are idiots. No brains, empty brains. Probably their life must be very bad.’

Later on, Medvedev again called on umpire John Blom to do more to keep the crowd at bay.

‘Please is not enough. They are idiots. With idiots, please does not work,’ he said.

Medvedev has certainly been in the headlines this week, most notably for unleashing a furious rant at an umpire during his semi-final win over Stefanos Tsitsipas.

However, he’s not exactly won himself over with the crowd since the start. After beating Aussie favourite Nick Kyrgios he accused fans shouting out and disrupting his game of having a ‘low IQ.’

‘I came to win this match and I am happy that I managed to do it.
