Emma Raducanu 'tapping into' tactic that helped her win US Open

Emma Raducanu is in high spirits despite her Cincinnati Masters debut being cut short.

The British number one was knocked out of the tournament in the third round at the hands of Jessica Pegula, who won in straight sets.

But despite her early exit, Raducanu is full of positive takeaways as focus now shifts to her US Open title defence.

This time last year, the 19-year-old had started to turn heads following her senior breakthrough, but nobody expected her to completely shatter the glass ceiling so early on.

After less than three months since her WTA Tour debut, Raducanu stunned the world by defying all odds and winning the US Open.

The Brit had played just 16 senior WTA matches prior to her Flushing Meadows debut, which saw her become the first qualifier in history to win a Grand Slam title.

Now, for the first time in her career, Raducanu will enter a tournament as the reigning champion. But the world number 12 appears unfazed by the pressure — in fact, she has revealed she is actually honing in on a different style of play as she prepares to return to New York.

“Ive started going for my shots more — recently I’ve been playing and hoping they would miss,” Raducanu said during a post-match conference in Cincinnati. “I’ve been pushing the ball around.

“This week I was just like, I’m going to try it, I don’t care if I make errors, I’m going to overhit if anything.

“If I’m going to lose, I’m probably going to lose anyway pushing the ball around at this level, it just doesn’t work. So I thought I’m just going to do it, give this tournament a swing and it worked.”

Raducanu admitted she was proud of her performances in Ohio and believed they were a strong way to move forward and head into the US Open.
