The 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez may have been making her main draw debut at the Miami Open, but she entered the tournament in a rich vein of form.
She successfully defended her title at the Monterrey Open earlier this month, before reaching the fourth round of Indian Wells.
Seeded 18th for the Miami Open, Fernandez came up against Karolína Muchová, the world number 74 who had not played for seven months due to an abdominal injury.
Despite her lack of playing time, Muchová overcame Fernandez in two sets, triumphing 6-4, 7-6. She will be hoping for a similar performance against Naomi Osaka in the third round.
Firstly, it must be acknowledged that Elina Svitolina will be understandably distracted from tennis at the moment. This is due to circumstances in Ukraine, the 27-year-old’s home country, which was invaded by Russian forces last month.
This was likely to have been on her mind as she lost 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 to Britain’s Heather Watson, who is 95 places below Svitolina in the WTA world rankings.
Watson will now go on to play Olympic champion Belinda Bencic in the third round.
US Open champion Emma Raducanu suffered another early exit, losing to Kateřina Siniaková in the second round of the Miami Open.
Seeded 11th, Raducanu suffered a litany of missed chances, converting just five of 17 break-points.
The world number 13 has struggled to get going this year, winning only two of seven matches. World number 53 Siniaková progresses into
