Emerson Fittipaldi reveals delight as Volkswagen eyes Formula 1 involvement

Former Formula 1 world champion Emerson Fittipaldi says that it is ‘fantastic news’ that Volkswagen is set to enter F1 from 2026, with their Porsche and Audi brands.

The sport has had a pretty settled grid in recent years with no teams leaving and no new teams arriving.

However, with the engine rules set to change in F1 around the middle of the decade, we could see some different names involved with the sport, and Audi and Porsche are two of them.

Both have been linked with providing engines to some of the teams at the very least, and Fittipaldi thinks that it could be great news for the sport as a whole.

“I think it’s one of the best pieces of news this year for Formula 1,” he told Vegas Insider.

“Because when you get a factory or a group like Volkswagen to get into F1, it would be fantastic news. Because I am sure they will bring big challenges with them. They will commit very seriously to being successful. They invest a lot of money, they’ll need new people.

“I think this is very good news for F1, for the public, and for the racing fans.

“I hope they come as soon as possible, Formula 1 needs more competitive teams.”

Volkswagen are one of the biggest automotive brands in the world, and they also own the likes of Seat and Lamborghini.

It makes sense that they are involved in some capacity in Formula 1, then, and it looks as though they will dip their toes into the sport once the new engine regulations come into effect later on in the decade.

It adds a bit more variety to the grid, too, and that can only be a good thing, so it’s no shock that Fittipaldi is pleased with the news.
