'Embarrassment' - Rio Ferdinand sends message to Manchester United players after Liverpool 'massacre'

Rio Ferdinand sent a clear message to Manchester United's players after the 'absolute massacre' at Anfield as the Reds lost 7-0 to Liverpool.

United fell to a 7-0 defeat for the first time since Boxing Day in 1931 at Anfield, with the Merseyside club recording their biggest-ever competitive win against the Reds. Erik ten Hag's side have now gone eight games without a win at Liverpool, where they have only won three times since December 2007.

Liverpool had three players score two goals in the game, with Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez all grabbing braces. Substitute Roberto Firmino scored the seventh and final goal of the clash in the 88th minute after coming off the bench in the second half.

Ten Hag's men came under intense scrutiny after the defeat at Anfield on Sunday, and former defender Ferdinand was critical of the players following the heavy loss. However, he also urged to players to ensure that it did not derail their campaign.

"We’ve been pulverised," Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel. "That was a massacre. An absolute massacre at Anfield. That’s all you can call it. The players will be feeling embarrassed."

He added: "[Erik] ten Hag, man… If I was him, the team would know I would be upset but one of the main points would be do not let this derail your season now.

"You come back in tomorrow, you get back to work, you look at what went wrong and then you go to Southampton at Old Trafford. You make sure that you give the fans something to shout about after the embarrassment here at Anfield.

"All of you, sit there and let that feeling sink in about how embarrassing and how bad it feels."
