Ellen Walshe sets new record in 50m Butterfly title win

Ellen Walshe set a new national record on the way to winning the 50m Butterfly title at Swim Ireland's Irish National Winter Championships on Friday.

The 21-year-old, returning to action after a prolonged period away, finished in a time of 25.90 seconds at the National Aquatic Centre to shave 0.2 seconds off the previous record mark that she had set in the event back in 2019.

The 50m Butterfly title adds to the Templeogue native's title success in the 100m Individual Medley yesterday.

Jack Cassin lowered his own national junior record to 4:15.28 on the way to winning the 400m Individual Medley, taking four seconds off the previous mark.

The 18-year-old had set a new national junior record in the 100m Individual Medley on Thursday.

Ards Swimming Club's quartet of Charlie Eatwell, Grace Davison, Zophia Quigley and Benji Cummings also set a new junior record of 1:37.20 as they claimed silver in the 4x50m Mixed Freestyle Relay, behind Larne's Thomas Leggett, Morgan Berryman, Kaitlyn McCaw and Danielle Hill.

Larne's team picked up their second gold of the day in the 4x50m Medley Relay.

Other gold medal winners on the second day of the championships included Victoria Catterson (Women's 200m Freestyle), Olympian Finn McGeever (Men's 200m freestyle), Ronan Fahey (Men's 1500m Freestyle) and Grace Cochrane (Women's 1500m Freestyle).

Jena MacDougald, who had won gold in the 50m backstroke yesterday, added the 100m title to her medal haul on Friday, while John Shortt won his first national title in the men's event.

Hannah McCabrey (Women's 400m Individual Medley), Molly Mayne (Women's 200m Breaststroke) and Eoin Corby (Men's 200m Breaststroke) also won national titles on Friday.
