Elena Sadiku always knew Celtic would need to beat Rangers to win title with rivals level at top – SWPL round-up

Elena Sadiku insists Celtic always knew they would need to beat Rangers to win the title.

The Hoops side were held to a 2-2 draw by Glasgow City, a result that saw their two-point cushion evaporate. Rangers’ 3-0 win over Hearts means, with four league games left, the Old Firm are level on points ahead of the derby at the top of the SWPL standings.

Celtic boss Sadiku said: “Even if we were two points ahead or not we we’d have wanted to win the game. It is always about winning and that is not going to change.” Hayley Lauder put City ahead but a Lee Gibson OG and Caitlin Hayes put Celtic ahead before sub Charlotte Wardlaw levelled. Chelsea Cornet, Lizzie Arnot and Libby Bance netted in Rangers’ win. Speaking after securing three big points, Rangers boss Jo Potter said: "The win was important, that is what everyone will be looking at, we needed three points tonight and we needed to make sure we got our job done especially after the slip-up away to Hearts not too long ago.

"We knew we were coming into the game in good form, we had to take confidence from the weekend so the main thing was three big points tonight. We knew Hearts only needed half a chance or a set-piece to take advantage of because they have got some good height and good delivery, so we had to make sure we shored things up in the second half.

“I thought we were lacking a little bit of quality in the first-half but we soon sorted that out, we made sure we got control of the game a little bit more and took the game to Hearts. We played the majority of the game in their half in the second-half and that is an important thing for me that we keep that pressure on.”
