Eight of the saddest Coronation Street storylines that left viewers devastated

Coronation Street has been a fixture on our TV screens for over 60-years. In that time has seen more of its fair share of tragedies - from shocking murders to terrible accidents.

However, nothing quite affects the soap's millions of fans like the death of a beloved character. There were heart-wrenching scenes earlier this week when one of the soap's much-loved characters died following a Motor Neurone Disease diagnosis.

Paul Foreman was rushed to hospital as he struggled to breathe and later, after doctors said there was nothing more that could be done, he took his last breath. But in a further heart-breaking twist, his husband Billy Mayhew was unable to get to the hospital in time to say a final goodbye.

The scenes left the soap's fans devastated. But the writers, actors and crew working on the show have a long track record of portraying the death of its beloved characters sensitively - while at the same time retaining the drama loved by the soap's fans.
