Eddie Jones is confident England won't be thrashed by Australia

Eddie Jones insisted on Sunday night that England will not suffer a hiding in Australia, despite the worst defeat of his six-year stint as head coach at the hands of a 14-man Barbarians side.

England not only failed to beat a team who lost giant lock Will Skelton to a 37th-minute red card, but shipped eight tries.

Jones, who will confirm his touring squad on Monday morning, said: 'Obviously we're disappointed. No one is happy about it, but we're not going to go to Australia and get beaten by 50. We have a style of play we want to keep developing and now we'll pick and choose when we use it.

'This was preparation for Australia. We tried to play differently and extend the players. In some places we didn't cope well with it.

'It's a good reminder of how much work we have to do before Australia. From that point of view, I'm really pleased with what we did.'

Jones bristled when asked if the sight of former England lock George Kruis converting a Barbarians try with a backheel on his last appearance before retirement was embarrassing.

He is also battling an injury crisis for the tour Down Under. No 8 Alex Dombrandt was a late withdrawal with a knee problem and Leicester fly-half George Ford suffered an ankle worry in the Premiership title win over Saracens on Saturday.

With Manu Tuilagi, Henry Slade, Sam Simmonds, Kyle Sinckler, Louis Lynagh and George Furbank already ruled out, Jones has key men missing.

He played down talk of a recall for Saracens No 8 Billy Vunipola after a head knock against Leicester, while Ben Youngs and Joe Marler are also concerns.

The Barbarians' win was a fitting tribute to Phil Bennett, who died earlier this month.
