Eddie Howe bites back at Jamie Carragher over Newcastle United claim he 'doesn't like to hear'

Eddie Howe has responded to Jamie Carragher's criticism that his Newcastle team are performing "unacceptably" with no heart, passion or energy.

Pundit Carragher had said that the Howe's players seemed "ready for the end of the season" after their loss to Chelsea on Monday night, a performance he called "not acceptable." This sparked a strong reaction from some Newcastle fans who are unhappy with the team's recent run in the Premier League.

Howe has reassured fans that he does not shy away from criticising his players behind closed doors when needed, but will always support them publicly. With an upcoming match against Manchester City, Newcastle will need to improve at the back to have any hope of winning. When asked about the fans' anger, Howe said: "No I was not aware. Am I surprised? No I am not. We are in a results driven business and I wasn't happy. I was angry after the game. There was a lot of internal reflection."

In response to the claim that his players lacked spine, heart, passion and energy, Howe said: "It is not nice to hear. Especially after what we stood for last season. I think we were the absolute opposite of what you have quoted.

"But I understand emotional responses to games. I am sure the people who have written those words mean them. Now it is up to us to answer them. The message would be support the team, the players on the pitch, leave any anger and resentment - those type of emotions - for me."
