Roberto De Zerbi to Liverpool makes sense for Jamie Carragher as Anfield hero makes Brighton boss prediction

Jamie Carragher has had his say on the rumours linking Roberto De Zerbi with the Liverpool job and reckons the Italian may opt to call it quits at Brighton next summer.

The former Sassuolo boss has been touted as a potential successor to Jurgen Klopp, who will step down after nine years at Anfield at the end of the season. Ex-Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso was initially seen as the front runner for the vacancy, but confirmed at a press conference on Friday that he will stay with high-flying Bayer Leverkusen - who are on the verge of claiming their first ever Bundesliga title - for the time being.

Sporting CP head coach Ruben Amorim is also said to be on the Premier League giants radar, with the returning Director of Football Michael Edwards set to spearhead the search for the next Reds manager. De Zerbi, 44, has enjoyed great success in the Premier League with Brighton since his arrival in November 2022, leading the club to European qualification in their 122-year history last season.

The Italian's side have also become something of a bogey team for Liverpool, taking five points from the last three games against Klopp prior to this afternoon's narrow 2-1 defeat at Anfield. Speaking on Sky Sports before the game, club legend Carragher can see why the Brescia-born boss would be on Liverpool's shortlist to take on the job in the summer.

He said: "I'm sure he's in the running - I don't think there's any doubt about that - I'm not sure if he's at the top of that list but he's got a fantastic record against Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp since he joined Brighton.
