Eddie Hearn 'doesn't believe' Tyson Fury will actually retire

Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn isn’t convinced that Tyson Fury is going to retire from professional boxing.

Last Saturday night at Wembley Stadium, Tyson Fury knocked Dillian Whyte out in the sixth round to retain The Ring and WBC heavyweight titles. The victory further cements Fury’s claim that he’s the best heavyweight of his generation, and it also sets him up for some pretty significant fights down the road.

However, with ‘The Gypsy King’ suggesting that he’s going to walk away from the sport, some have been left to feel like his work in boxing will be unfinished.

He’s teased an exhibition match with Francis Ngannou, but the real money is in an undisputed title fight against the winner of the Oleksandr Usyk vs Anthony Joshua rematch.

Eddie Hearn agrees, which is why he’s not so sure Fury genuinely wants to retire – as he revealed during an interview with Ariel Helwani.

“I don’t really believe anything he says, but he’s also capable of doing anything,” said Hearn.

“If he wants to walk away from boxing, good on him. He’s made a lot of money, he’s won the championship, and if he’s happy doing that, good luck to him. I just feel that his biggest fights are in front of him, the real, career-defining, legacy-defining stuff. 

“There’s a lot of talk at the moment about him being a generational great and better than Lennox Lewis and these fighters of the past, he may be, but ain’t got the resume to prove it yet. But he could do. If he beats ‘AJ,’ if he beats Usyk, or certainly the winner of that fight, he goes down as an undisputed champion, a Lennox Lewis style, legacy, generational great.”
