EasyJet issues warning to holidaymakers travelling to Italy

EasyJet has warned passengers travelling to Italy this June of longer waits at airports. The airline has urged holidaymakers to “allow extra time for their journey”.

It comes as the country hosts the G7 Summit this month. It means there will likely be extra security checks at Italian airports which could lead to queues.

In a statement on its website, easyJet said: “Please allow extra time for your journey. Additional security checks are in place at Italian airports throughout the month of June as Italy hosts the G7 Summit. This may include temporary border controls and API checks while the event takes place and queues may be longer than normal.”

This year’s G7 Summit takes place from June 13 to June 15. It’s being held in Fasano in Puglia, the south-east region of the country.

The annual summit brings together the leaders of the seven member states - which are the world’s seven largest “advanced economies”. These countries are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the United States.

The member countries are joined by the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission representing the European Union. This year Italy has the G7 presidency and it will be hosted by Italy’s prime minister Giorgia Meloni.

Rishi Sunak will break away from election campaigning to attend the summit. He is set to announce up to £242million in bilateral assistance to Ukraine to be used for immediate humanitarian, energy and stabilisation needs in the country.
