'Easy as that' - Erling Haaland gives a glimpse into what makes him a Man City superstar

The auditorium at the Manchester City training ground was busier than usual and the main topic of focus was one man.

Not all, for Pep Guardiola was asked a number of questions about the Mexican youngster Alex Alcala, a Mexican teenager signed from LA Galaxy in the January transfer window who has trained with the first team a few times in line with the club policy of exposing academy players to senior training. After those had been fielded though, proceedings moved onto the main order of the day.

Erling Haaland has done just three interviews with written media since arriving in July 2022, a man forever in demand with broadcasters around games because of the extraordinary things he can do with a football. As he positioned himself with elbows on the table, leaning forward to receive questions, City's No.9 immediately made his presence felt.

"You can think about it in two ways," he boomed on being asked about the motivation after winning everything in his first year. "I came in and won it all. I'm 23 and I won everything and I got a taste of it how it is to win and how I work is that when I feel this I want to win it again - easy as that."

Because there are so few opportunities to ask him anything, the questions flew thick and fast: Lionel Messi, Liverpool, missing chances, life in Manchester, his contract and his future, his mentality, his injury, United striker Rasmus Hojlund, and Copenhagen. Thirteen minutes and almost as many topics cycled through that were all met with the same confidence and openness.
