'That's what he says but it wasn't like that' - Aymeric Laporte slams Pep Guardiola transfer policy at Man City

Pep Guardiola always tells a player that they can leave Manchester City if they want to go and can present the club with an acceptable offer. But Aymeric Laporte has questioned whether Guardiola actually sticks to that principle in practice.

Laporte left City in the summer after five-and-a-half seasons, having fallen out of favour in defence and often being asked to play at left-back. He had suggested he was unhappy at his situation, and eventually left for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, with no European clubs offering him a route out of Manchester.

Reflecting on the manner of his Etihad exit, Laporte claimed that he was not the only City player who didn't quite experience the transfer policy that allowed them to leave if they wanted to.

"That's what he usually says. For several players it wasn't like that, but I'm not going to go into that type of things," Laporte told Radio Marca this week of Guardiola's transfer stance for unhappy players. "I decided to leave and I was able to leave. That's it.

"I also made that decision for the moment, I think it was the right one, due to life circumstances and also because of my situation at City. I had been playing there for a long time, I had achieved almost everything and I had been playing for two years in a place that was not the position that I did not want to play."

With his use as an alternative left-back one of his reasons for leaving, Laporte said he was not able to show his best form due to Guardiola's rotation policy.
