East Kilbride Thistle hit Saltcoats for six as defensive record improves

East Kilbride Thistle boss Aaron Connolly is delighted to see his side cut out the mistakes at the back, as his strikers continue to hit fine form up front.

After being involved in two high-scoring draws – a 5-5 at Newmains United and a 4-4 at BSC Glasgow – in between a 2-0 home win over Easterhouse, the Jags thumped Saltcoats Victoria 6-1 on Saturday to stay unbeaten in the West of Scotland Fourth Division.

Connolly was pleased to see his side keep the goal concessions to a minimum after some chaotic games of late and heaped praise on his front line as Michael Blues and Mitchell Rooney kept up their fine form.

Rooney and James Murray both bagged a brace in the win, while Blues and Adam Edgar were also on target

Connolly said: “Last season we didn’t get anyone into double figures and there were a host of reasons for that, with the squad turnover we had, so it is hugely important to us this season to find consistency in all areas but, most of all, in that forward area.

“And now we’ve got players who look like they will consistently score goals.

“Michael Blues, playing off the right, has scored goals in every league match so far and Mitchell Rooney, who has come in and played up top, has scored in every league match as well and has five goals in four games.

“Not only that, the players around them have got a decent level of assists.

“It is really pleasing. We’ve found a consistency in our attacking threat and James Murray came off the bench at the weekend and scored two so we are starting to really come together in that area.

“So far we look promising but it is early days. It was a really positive performance, topped off with a positive result and a big win.
