East Kilbride RR secure silverware double and now eye treble

Hot on the heels of lifting the Greater Glasgow Premier League title last weekend, EKRR claimed another trophy on Friday night as they won the GGPL President’s League Cup.

And the on-form side can now complete a treble this coming Friday if they down EK Dynamo in the Bobby Thomson Challenge Cup.

It has been an impressive season for the free-scoring side and it was Johnstone Burgh who were on the end of a beating in their latest victory.

Expectations were high as EKRR travelled to Johnstone and a sizeable crowd made the trip over for the match.

The early part of the game saw each side probing for an opening, but chances were few and far between with an air of nervousness creeping in.

Johnstone Burgh set their game plan out early, happy to soak up the pressure in the hope of scoring on the break or from a dead ball situation.

Rolly winger Andy Brown was singled out for some tough tackling from the Burgh’s defence, but with his skill and pace he was able to get the better of their tactics.

Sam Watson came closest to scoring on 21 minutes when he got on the end of a cross into the box, but headed past the post. Soon after, Johnstone Burgh were awarded a direct free kick just outside the box on 25 minutes, but thankfully Rolly keeper Nick Martin was on his toes and saved the resulting shot easily.

Then on 30 minutes, a free kick into the Burgh penalty area from Ryan McParland was met by Jonny Diack who headed the ball high into the net beyond the Burgh keeper making it 1-0 to the Rolly as the first half came to a close.

The Rolly came back out determined to score another goal to put the match beyond Johnstone Burgh’s reach.
