Dwight Yorke details major problem behind Manchester United offloading £109million duo

Dwight Yorke would be 'surprised' to see both Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial at Manchester United next season but believes their high wages could present a problem.

Erik ten Hag looks set to oversee a busy summer at United, with the Dutchman looking to trim the fat of his current squad. Several fringe players are at risk of being axed, with the club needing to raise money for incomings.

With Wout Weghorst returning to parent club Burnley, Martial will become United's only recognised senior striker but a world-class No.9 is Ten Hag's priority. The French international arrived at Old Trafford for around £36million in 2015, but has continually struggled with injuries throughout his eight-year spell.

Sancho has failed to fulfil his potential since arriving two years ago in a deal worth £73million, the winger also suffering with fitness problems and has been unable to sew together consistent minutes. He was absent from United's first-team for over three months, having been placed on an individual training programme.

“I’d be surprised if both of them are still there, in many respects," Yorke told Match.Center. "The problem United have is that they’re on such high wages at the moment, so there’s only a few clubs who could actually afford them.

"You look at Martial, who has been at the club for nearly eight years – it’s a long time when you think what he’s actually contributed to the team. I know he’s got his injury problems, but when you do the maths, the return on investment doesn’t quite add up, so maybe he needs a fresh start.
