Dundee vs Rangers 'closed door' option floated amid pitch chaos as Motherwell risk sees 2 sanctions escalated

Celtic legend Simon Donnelly has floated the prospect of Rangers clash with Dundee being played behind closed doors amid fears over the Dens Park pitch.

And ex-Ibrox hero Kenny Miller reckons that any further issues at Dens could see the SPFL step in and sanction the Dark Blues as a final pitch inspection for the clash with Motherwell looms - with a points deduction floated as a potential option. With the likes of Airdrie's Excelsior Stadium being considered as an option to play the Scottish Premiership clash between Tony Docherty's side and the Steelmen, Motherwell chief executive Brian Caldwell has warned the SPFL they will have to delay the post-split fixtures if their game is called off.

An 11am pitch inspection is scheduled on Saturday with heavy rain putting the match in doubt. It would be the fifth game the Dens Park club will have had postponed due to a waterlogged pitch this season, with an investigation by the governing body already underway into the previous four.

Caldwell also ruled out playing the game behind closed doors on Sunday or Monday at an alternative venue, sparking a debate on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard about what is the next move from the SPFL. Rangers are expected to travel to Dens Park on Wednesday for their clash in the midst of the title battle with Celtic.

Miller said: "We had this conversation after the Rangers game was cancelled - if they have been having these conversations all week surely with the rain that has been forecast they can protect the pitch enough. Surely they can."
