Gatvol Gamondi blasts ref after Yanga's controversial Champions League exit: 'It was a robbery'

Miguel Gamondi was so angry after Young Africans' controversial CAF Champions League quarter-final elimination that, at first, he refused to take any questions in the post-match press conference.

The Yanga coach slammed Mauritanian referee Dahane Beida for disallowing what looked like a legitimate goal for the Tanzanians, without even bothering to check the screen in a match the official also had video assistant referee (VAR) which was led by Ghanaian Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea.

Aziz Ki scored a brilliant goal at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Friday night, just after the hour mark against Mamelodi Sundowns.

But Beida didn't immediately allow the goal to stand despite video evidence showing that the entire circumference of the ball had crossed the line.

The referee then waited for confirmation from the VAR, who were checking whether the goal should stand. After a few minutes of checking, Beida was informed that it wasn't a goal without going to the monitor to check for himself before making the decision.

VAR doesn't make decisions in the match. They check whether the referee has made a correct decision and, if there are doubts, they call on the official to check for themselves and then make an informed decision.

Beida had already made the call that it wasn't the goal, so the VAR was checking whether his decision was the correct one.

Sundowns survived the scare and went on to win 3-2 in penalties to book a place in the semi-finals of the Champions
