Dundee United break silence over fan chants aimed at The Queen but stop short of full apology

Dundee United have offered a brief response to the boos and chants from the supporters during the minute's silence Queen Elizabeth before their against Rangers - but stopped short of a full apology.

Some of the Tangerine support chanted "Lizzie's in a box" and there were jeers which prompted a furious response from the home punters after referee Kevin Clancy signalled the end of the pre-mach mark of respect or the late monarch. The actions have been widely derided by punters and pundits.

But the brief statement from Tannadice club issued a statement, saying: " Dundee United are aware of the actions of a small section of the crowd who chose to not respect the minute's silence before this afternoon's match at Ibrox. As a club, ahead of the game we reached out to advise our supporters of the pre-match arrangements with the expectation that the minute silence would be observed."

Antonio Colak netted a double in the game to earn Gers their first win in four games with Liam Smith scoring for the Taysiders.
