Dumfries Hockey Club holds inaugural President's Day

The inaugural President’s Day took place recently to celebrate the end of the season with some intra club fun and also to raise funds for a local charity.

The day started with the youth section taking to the pitch to take part in mixed games as well as fun challenges of target hockey, beat the goalie and keepie-uppies.

More than 40 youths took to the pitch along with some family members who joined in with many of the challenges. This was rounded off by a fun family relay.

Beat the goalie – U8s: Jack Callander. U10s: Gregor Sloan. U12s: Huratio Neil. U16s: Elliot Oakes.

All the winners received their own emjoi ball which were kindly presented by Kaz Cuthbert, vice president of Scottish Hockey.

There was then a pause in hockey activities as the barbecue was fired up and members enjoyed a selection of burgers and sausage rolls.

Throughout the day, raffle tickets and tombola tickets were sold and a total of £400 was raised for Parkinson’s Scotland and a cheque was presented to the charity in the afternoon. However, a further raffle raised another £100 and this was also donated to the charity.

It was then the turn of the ladies who took to the field with two mixed teams, whites and reds.

The game was thrown back in time as the first half was played with the rules from days gone by, with offsides and roll-ins being allowed and obstruction being harshly penalised by the umpires.

The second half was then played with the current rules.

It was a tight and competitive game which was won by the white team 2-0, goals scored by Michelle Edgar and Amy Niven.
