Dumfries bowler Rosemary Lenton to represent Scotland in World Championships

Dumfries bowler Rosemary Lenton is going from Commonwealth Games gold to the Gold Coast this summer.

The Crichton Royal Bowling Club member has been named in the Scotland squad for the 2023 World Bowls Championships, which take place in Australia in August.

For the first time at the Worlds, para disciplines will be included alongside mainstream categories such as the men’s and women’s.

Rosemary will team up with Pauline Wilson, who won in Birmingham last year, in the B6-B8 Pairs event.

The 73-year-old said: “We’re really excited about going.

“I was delighted to have been chosen to represent Scotland again so it’s all go from now on to make sure we get up to tie right standard and get match fit.

“We’ll face quite a few of the teams we faced in the Commonwealth Games so we know how they play and we’ve beaten them before.

“We beat the Australians in the final last year but this time they’re on their home ground. There’s always that rivalry in bowls, a bit like cricket, you always want to win. We’re certainly up for the challenge and we’re looking forward to it.”

Rosemary has represented Scotland three times at World Bowls Championships and has played curling at nine Worlds and after her Commonwealth Games win last year she became the oldest gold medallist in the history of the event.

The tournament runs from Tuesday, August 29 to Sunday, September 10.

She said: “I think the standard will be just as good as the Commonwealth Games.

“There’s about 47 nationalities so it will be quite something.”
