Driver suffers potentially serious injuries in crash with double-decker bus

A driver has suffered 'potentially serious' injuries after a crash involving a bus on one of the region's busiest roads. The smash happened on the A6 Wellington Road North near Stockport town centre earlier this evening (Tuesday).

Emergency services raced to the scene after a car and a double-decker Bee Network-branded bus were involved in a collision near the The Magnet pub.

The driver of the car was suffered injuries described by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) as 'potentially serious' and was rushed to hospital. No one on the bus was seriously injured, the force said.

The road was initially closed in both directions between Church Road and the A5145 Travis Brow link road. Traffic can now pass but according to the traffic service it remains 'partially blocked' with queuing traffic and long delays in the area.

GMP said in a statement: "Police are responding to a road traffic collision involving a car and a bus on Wellington Road North in Stockport this evening (Tuesday 23 January 2024). The A6 is closed in both directions as emergency services respond to the incident.

"The driver of the car has suffered potentially serious injuries and has been taken to Stepping Hill Hospital. No serious injuries have been reported for the people on the bus."

A Stagecoach spokesperson said: “We can confirm that one of our buses was involved in an incident at around 15:35 today (23 January 2024) on the A6 in Stockport.

“Safety is of upmost importance to us, and we are assisting the police with their inquiries into this incident."
