Driver arrested as girl seriously injured after being hit by a bus

A teenage girl was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a bus in Tameside.

Emergency services, including police officers and paramedics, responded to the crash on Manchester Road in Audenshaw at around 5.20pm yesterday (Wednesday). Police said there was a 'collision between a bus and a pedestrian'.

The teenage girl suffered serious injuries, though they are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing. A man, aged in his 50s, was arrested on suspicion of causing injury by careless driving.

He has since been released pending further enquiries, police said. A stretch of the road was taped off for hours after the crash yesterday as investigations were carried out by Serious Collision Investigations Unit officers.

Pictures showed the windscreen of the bus within the cordon left shattered. Witnesses reported seeing a casualty being assessed in the road.

In a statement, a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "At around 5.20pm yesterday (Wednesday 5 July 2023), officers responded to a collision between a bus and a pedestrian on Manchester Road, Tameside. A teenage girl was taken to hospital with serious injuries, not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

"A man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of causing injury by careless driving. He has since been released pending further enquiries."
